To get more Google reviews in Dubai, ask every customer once, within hours of the visit, with a direct Google review link or QR code. Send it in the channel they use, usually WhatsApp in the UAE. Never offer a reward or ask only happy customers, because Google removes reviews that break those rules. Reply to what comes in
Below is the review-request flow we use for clinics, salons and restaurants, the Google policy lines behind it, and the one WhatsApp rule that most owners miss. This is general information, not legal advice, and the policies are described as of October 2026.
Why do Google reviews matter for a Dubai business?
Reviews feed local ranking and the first impression a buyer sees on Maps. Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence depends partly on how many reviews you have: "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Google Business Profile help). Distance you cannot change. Relevance comes from a complete profile. Reviews are the factor you can grow every week. The rest of the profile, from categories to address rules, is covered in Google Business Profile in Dubai.
They also matter for AI answers. AI engines often cite review platforms and Google Business Profile listings when they recommend local businesses, so a profile with few reviews gives them little to quote. We cover how to see what the engines say about you in how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business, and how Google's own AI layer picks sources in Google AI Overviews in the UAE. Reviews are one input among several, and nobody outside the engines can promise a ranking from them.
How many customers leave a review if you ask?
It depends on whether you ask at all. A beauty salon owner told us they had never collected reviews. After a WhatsApp follow-up sent 3 hours after the visit, about 10% of visits now leave one. That is the owner's own count, not a benchmark, and it is a single business.
The same pattern shows up in our booking agent build for clinics and services, where reviews now come from about 10% of visits. The number is not the point. The point is that the ask was automatic, so it happened after every visit and not only when someone remembered.
The salon did not have a reputation problem. It had never asked. One WhatsApp message three hours after the visit, sent to every client, moved it to reviews from about one visit in ten
What are Google's rules for asking for reviews?
Google allows you to ask. It forbids three things: paying for reviews, picking who you ask, and faking them. These come from Google's Maps user-generated content policy and its guidance for businesses. Clinics have one more layer, because DHA advertising standards also set conditions on publishing reviews, as our dental clinic SEO guide explains.
- No incentives. The policy bars content "posted due to an incentive offered by a business", and lists payment, discounts, and free goods or services as examples. A free coffee or 10% off the next visit for a review is out.
- No review gating. Merchants may not "selectively solicit positive reviews from customers" or discourage negative ones. A message that asks "Were you happy?" and sends only the happy ones to Google is gating.
- No fake reviews. Reviews "that have been paid for, directly or in kind" are fake engagement, and content "based on a conflict of interest" is not allowed either. That includes staff and family writing reviews.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Send the same review request to every customer | Filter by satisfaction before sharing the link |
| Say "tell us honestly how it went" | Offer a discount, gift or entry into a draw |
| Share the plain Google link or QR code | Ask staff, friends or relatives to post |
| Reply to positive and negative reviews | Argue, share private details, or ask to delete a bad review for a reward |
| Ask once, with one gentle reminder at most | Message the same customer repeatedly |
How do you get your Google review link or QR code?
You get it from your Business Profile on a computer. Google's steps are to open your profile at business.google.com, select Read reviews, then choose the share option. Copy the review link, or right-click the QR code and save it as an image. QR codes cannot be generated on mobile (Google: create a link or QR code to request reviews). Google also notes that the customer must be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review, so keep the ask to one tap.
Put the QR code where the visit ends: at the till, on the bill folder, on the mirror at the salon. Use the link in the WhatsApp message. Both lead to the same review form.
What does a review-request flow look like?
A good flow has few steps, each tied to a moment, a channel, and a rule. This is the one we build for service businesses.
| Moment | Channel | Message | Rule it respects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer finishes the visit | QR code at the till or desk | "Enjoyed your visit? Scan to share your experience" | Same sign for everyone, no gating |
| 3 hours after the visit | WhatsApp template, only to customers who opted in | "Thank you for visiting [business] today. Tell us honestly how it went: [Google link]" | Opt-in, template category, no incentive |
| 2 days later, no review yet | One WhatsApp reminder, same template family | "A quick reminder, your feedback helps us improve: [link]" | One reminder only, no pressure |
| A review appears | Google Business Profile | Reply by name, short, specific | Google's reply guidance |
| A negative review appears | Google reply plus a private WhatsApp offer to fix it | "Sorry about this. Please message us so we can put it right" | No private details in public, no deleting for a reward |
The customer's feedback, good or bad, goes to the same link. If someone writes back with a complaint, the agent hands the thread to a person, as in our human handoff design. Complaints should also reach the owner, but they must not decide who gets the link.
What WhatsApp rules apply to a review request?
Two rules apply, opt-in and template category. You need the customer's agreement to receive WhatsApp messages from your business, which Meta sets out in its opt-in guidance. A booking form with a clear WhatsApp consent line, or a customer who messaged you first, is the clean case. The full evidence checklist is in WhatsApp opt-in rules for UAE businesses.
Template category decides the cost. Meta says feedback surveys can be utility templates only when they relate to a specific interaction, and that "a general/generic survey or request for feedback will not be approved as utility". A message that mixes in promotion becomes marketing (Meta: template guidelines). Meta also re-checks approved templates and can move a utility template to marketing. So reference the visit, keep out the offer, and budget for the possibility that it is billed as marketing.
The UAE rate card effective 1 October 2026 is 0.0576 AED for utility and 0.2115 AED for marketing per message (Meta pricing). At those rates a review request costs between roughly 6 and 21 fils. Rates and categories change, so check the current card. More on costs in WhatsApp Business API in the UAE.
How should you reply to Google reviews?
Reply to as many as you can, by name, and keep it short. Google's guidance says to address the reviewer by name, acknowledge their specific feedback, avoid repetitive thank-yous and promotions, and respond in a timely way. With negative reviews, never share a reviewer's private information and avoid personal attacks. You must verify your business first. Steps: Business Profile, Read reviews, Reply icon, write, Reply (Google: reply to reviews).
A reviewer is notified when you reply and can change their review afterwards. That is the legitimate way to recover a bad review: fix the problem, then reply, and let them update it. Do not offer anything in return. For a worked example, our guide to restaurant SEO in Dubai shows what short, personal replies look like for a restaurant.
How does this connect to AI search?
Reviews are one part of being named by AI engines. The rest is the page content, structured data and consistent business details, which we cover in our AI search visibility service. A clean review flow gives the engines more recent, specific text to draw on.
The takeaway
Ask every customer, once, with a plain Google link or QR code. Send it 3 hours after the visit on WhatsApp, to people who opted in, in a message tied to their visit. Never reward, never filter, never fake. Reply to every review you can. Get the free AI test and we will show you what ChatGPT, Gemini and the other four engines say about your business today.
Questions people ask
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's policy bars reviews posted because of an incentive from a business, and names payment, discounts and free goods or services. Offering one can get reviews removed and your profile restricted. Ask politely, make it easy with a link or QR code, and say thank you in a reply instead
Can I ask only happy customers for a review?
No. Google says businesses may not selectively solicit positive reviews or discourage negative ones, which is called review gating. Send the same request to every customer, whatever they thought. If someone is unhappy, fix it privately and publicly reply, but never filter who gets the link
How do I get my Google review link or QR code?
Open your Business Profile at business.google.com on a computer, select Read reviews, then choose the share option. Copy the review link or save the QR code image. Google notes that QR codes cannot be generated on mobile, and the customer must be signed in to a Google Account
When is the best time to ask for a Google review?
Ask while the visit is fresh, within hours. One beauty salon owner told us that a WhatsApp follow-up 3 hours after the visit now brings reviews from about 10% of visits, having collected none before. That is one business, so test the timing on your own customers
Can I send a review request on WhatsApp in the UAE?
Yes, if the customer opted in to WhatsApp messages from your business and you use an approved template. Meta says a generic feedback request will not be approved as utility, so tie the message to the specific visit and keep promotions out, or expect marketing rates
Do Google reviews help my business show up in AI answers?
They can help. AI engines often cite review platforms and Google Business Profile listings when they recommend local businesses, and Google says reviews count toward local prominence. No one can promise a ranking, but a profile with recent, specific reviews gives engines more to quote
